THE ABANDONED STEAMER.
PRESS ASSOCIATION Wellington, last night. .At the annual meeting of the Shipmasters’ Association to day it was reported that there were now 213 members In the matter of safe-guarding life at sea, the Association had been instrumental in bringing about certain reforms and improvements in the regulations, and had made further suggestions whic would be adopted. The expenditure amounted to £730, due in a great measure to the number of casualties which had taken place and the assistance given to members. The amount expended during the year was £266 more than the receipts, but the financial position was still satisfactory. Mr G Wilson wns reelected President for the ninth year. The Association passed a resolution, expsessing unqualified dissatisfaction at the finding of the Court of Inquiry into the abandonment of the disabled steamer Port Stephens, and also surprise at the hurried and unfair way the trial was instituted, and the unfair nature of the proceedings. The resolution further urged that the case be reported without delay and more evidence called.
