A FINE POINT.
(To the Editor Gisborne Times.) Sir, —Fancy any connection existing between an Imperial Navy man and a mere ‘‘ Colonial!” Lieut. Terry gravely informed the Bench yesterday that the two delinquent Tars under oharga came under the latter oategory. No wonder there was suoh pronounoed outcry against tho placing of the colonial contingentors’ namos upon tho same monument as that erected to the famous Imperial Navy Captain. Q E.D. —I have, etc , J.G.
|Our correspondent has missod the point of Lieut Terry’s remark, because that official did not explain himself fully, assuming that people ashore were as conversant with life aboard tho Challenger as ho is. What bo intended to emphasise was tbat tho drunkennets of the two delinqoeots was attributable to the extra pay which the “ Colonials ” receive. The Colonial “tais” on board get 3d por day more than those who joined the Navy in Eogland, and this distinotion has oaused heartburnings amoDg the crews of the Australian EquadroD. Naturally theoffioers sympathise with the men who get least, and it is not they that have made the distinction.—Ed. G.T.^
