EAST COAST NEWS.
PORT AWAN'UT,
(Times Correspondent.)
There -were rumors last week of the natives here getting all the land hack that Government had bought. I have made enquiries, and have assurances from two parties that they have got a distinct promise to that effect from the Premier, Minister of Lands, and Native Minister. People who supported the Hon. Mr Carroll will not believe he will deliberately go back on his promise made at Port Awanui when he addressed the electors, and when asked about these sections he professed he did not know the Government had any sections here, and would enquire into the matter, and if they had they should be thrown open for selection at once. But I heard him say the same thing three years’ previously, and nothing yet done. The Squall has arrived. I do not mean a rain squall, but a steamer, and she is the first steamer to call for e:
:ght weeks. Things were getting to famine prices, and not procurable even then. Butter and various things shipped on IG'h July got here at la9t, only two months and ten days coming from Gisborne.
