HARE MATENGA
(Special to Times.) October 1. A striking example of the determiua-
tiou of the f*J aori pillager was illus trated here last week, when, after being foiled at Messrs Price and Co.’s camp in search for food, he immediately proceeded to a camp belonging to some navvies employed on the Government co-operative road works, and practically secured ail their stores Traces of where he had evidently been watching the men at work were afterwards found, and go further to provo the daring and cuDning of this notorious individual. Thin is the first time that Matenga has interfered with the roadmen. It is especially trying for the navvies to be robbed of their stores' because they have to get them brought on paekhorses from Tokomaru, a distance of over thirty miles, being unable to secure storoa at aDy of the stations like the bushmen. The weather is again fine, and no doubt will be greatly appreciated by the police, as they will be able to prosecute their search with more expediency.
