AUOKLAND DEFEATS SOUTH SIDNEY.

The looal men were pressed frcm the start. Cann, fending oS several opponents, orossed, but Burleigh failed at goal. A long spell of dreary play followed till the Auckland forwards came with a fine dribbling rush. Burleigh prevented what looked like a certain score. The Sydneyites rollied with a oombiued attack. The bail wont oat close to the Auckland lire. McCabe came through the scrum, got too ball as it returned from one of the backs, raced in, and passed to Burleigh, who scored. Hawthorne missed the goal. Tho South Sydney men continued to have the best of it, and compelled the Aucklanders to force down. Smith made several splendid runs, but could not beat the local books. One of tbß looal men was penalised for an illegal tackle, and Magee kicked a goal. At half time South Sydney had scored six and Auckland three, the final being: Auckland, eight; South Sydney, six.

In the second half Smith, from half way, dropped for tbo goa', the ball only faliing a few yards short, the looal men foroing down. The Auoklanders determinedly stormed the looal twenty five, but the local defence was excellent. Their forwards were faster cn the break up of the scrums. Time was drawing near, when the Aucklanders opened the game np, and the best play of the match was witnessed. Young sent the ball out to Smith, who streaked as straight as a dart from halfway for the local line. He was collared at the twenty-five yards’ boundary, but he passed to Gleddmg, who ran round and scored behind the posts. Magee- added the extra poinlß, The home team made desperate efforts, unavailingly, to retrieve tho position. There was rough-and-tumble play on the Auokland line, a free kick resulting for the local team right in front of the goal, but MoMahcn’s kick struok the post, and time was called, the score being Auckland 8 South Sydney 6

At a meeting of the Marlborough Rugby Union last night Casey, oaptain of the Awatore team, was suspended for the season, and an apology demanded from the team for leaving the field on Saturday. A spectator, Reegan, was warned off the Union’s grounds for lire. A resolution was passed strongly condemning the betting element.
