A SCENE
IMPUTATION OF CORRUPTION,
In tho Legislative Assembly Mr Bent brought nndoc notice a report in tho Argus of a speech made by Mr Solly at Woodend, in which ho charged the Government with being one of the most corrupt Vic-
toria had ever had. Mr Bent moved that Mr Solly be arrested by tho Ssrgeant-at-Atms. Mr Solly was called on to retire, but before doing so said he was merely quoting a remark by Dr. Enabling, M.L.O. Mr Scott Bennett (as soon as tbe motion was proposed) : Whv don’t you arrest yourself, you old rascal ? Mr Bent: Did you hear that—" You old rascal ?” Mr Scolt Bennett : I said it.
There was considerable uproar, but tbe Speaker called on Mr Soott Bennett to wiihdraw, aud ho did so.
Mr Eimalic suggested that as Mr Solly bad said he was quoting a remark by Dr. Embling bo might bo asked whether he meant to impute corruption to Ministers. This course was adopted, and tho Speaker loft tbe chair for five minutes. On returning he announced that he bad directed the e'erk to ask Mr Solly to uttend in the Chamber.
Mr Solly then said he had merely quoted Dr. Embling’s remark, and had not endorsed it. He was misreported by the Argus. Mr Bent withdrew the motion.
Dr. Embling, on being seen afterwards, denied ever having used the words mentioned by Mr Solly ; and Mr Solly on being seen reiterated his statement.
