MAORI'S TERRIBLE DEATH

FALLS INTO A COOKING POOL,

Ilotorua, Saturday. A terrible accident occurred at AVhakarewarewa to-day. A native named Kupcviore, uncle of Maggie Papakura, was missing this morning, and a search was made, hut the searchers were unable to find him. He left the meeting house last night to go home to his wharo about halfpast ten o’clock. This morning some human remains were noticed in a cooking

pool, and since then pieces of Kapericre's clothing have been found in the pool. This morning there was a severe eruptioq of the pool, and the natives thqqght it was an earthquake. Since then there have been three eruptions, the water being coated with an oily substance. There is no doubt but what Kapericro fell into the boiling pool. Last night was very dark, and lie had to pass the pool on his way to

his .wliare. The natives in Whakarewarewa pa arc grief-stricken. The strange peculiarity of the cooking pool is that clothes put in seldom come to the surface, and the natives are not surprised at the whole of Kapericre's clothing not being ejected. Much sympathy is_ felt for the relatives of the deceased. Kaperiere was 50 years of age.
