~j a_ ——i EFFECT ON FINANCES.
The rateable value of the Petone borough has . been reduced by £33,000 through the Government acquiring a large area for workers’ homes. This has had a serious effect upon the borough’d finances, as the land in question, or the rates there' from, have been pledged as security for certain loans, and further, the estimated revenue for the year was based on the total valuation, including this £33,000. The Conncil discussed this question recently, and the aotion of the Government was criticised as " victimising the many for the few," and so on. Councillors did not think the Legislature ever intended that a municipality should be subjected to such an injustice, and the Mayor was requested to press the matter at the municical conference, The Town Clerk stated that he had written to the Valuation I}apartmsnt asking it on what authority the rateable value of the borough has been altered as stated, and pointing out the manner in whioh it affeoted the Gounod's finances. Alter considerable discussion the matter was left in abeyanoe pending a reply from the Government,
