ELTHAM FATALITY.
QUARREL OYER A GIRL.

Eltbam, last night/ At an inquest on Rollin, a Swiss farm hand, fatally injured near Kaponga, on Saturday night, tho jury found that Carl Schicker had killed John Rollin, but added a rider that Vchicker struck the fatal blow in self* defence during a quarrel. Charles Schicker was brought before the Court to-day on a charge of the murder of John Rollin. The case was adjourned until the 10th inst. The police mailing no objection, accused was admitted to bail on his own recognisance of £IOO, and two sureties of £2OO each.
Late on Saturday night Constable Radi-* ’ oan, of Eltham, reoeived information to the effect that some men, residing near Kaponga had been quarrelling, and that one man had struok another and killed him. As a result of this information, the oonstable went to the locality where the fraoas had taken place, and after inquiry arrested a man known as Oharley Sollicker on a charge of killing John Rollin. The facts so far asoertainable are as follows: —The two men whose names have been mentioned were holding a wordy dispute concerning some girl. Rollin had been in reoeipt of eome postcards osloo* lated to annoy him, and blamed Schicker for sending them. Hot wordß ensued, and Rollin advanoed towards Schicker as though with the intention of striking .him. Sohicker bad in hie hand a new axe* handle, which ho had purohased ehoptly before, and with it dealt Rollin a blow, which struok him behind the left ear, Rollin staggered and fell. The witnesses of the scene were Joseph Stannar and Albert Ulrick, who, as soon as Rollin was struck, conveyed him inside a whare, and sent for Dr MoLagan, but Rollin expired just about the time of the doctor’s arrival.
The acousod was brought before the Eltbam Magistrate’s Coutl. Deteotive Siddells appeared on behalf of the police, and accused was represented by Mr G. P. Wake, - , . , The accused tyas formally charged ctf the information of the polios with killing John Rolling'■'Detective Siddells applied for a remand, stating that the police had not had sufficient time to oolleot evidence. Mr G. P. Wake pade.application for bail. ■Ueteotlve Siddells opposed, as the charge was a serious one. The Benoh asked for particulars of the case, which Constable; Rcdican supplied as far as ho was ac»' quaioted with them. Tho aoocsed was remanded to the 9th inst, the Benoh declining to grant bail. Detective Siddells agreed with accused’s oouneel that the application for bail could be renewed after the coroner's inquest.
