FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.
The twenty-ninth annual re port of the Registrar of Frindly Booieties, which was laid oo the table of the House, shows that daring the year 1905 there were 18 additional registrations in the colony, consisting of 6 Drnid lodges, 4 lodges of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows, 4 Foresters’ courts, 1 Reohabite tent, 2 branches of the Hibernian-Australasian Catholio Benefit Society, and 1 11 isolated friendly society,” viz., the Auckland Tramways S:ck and AcoideDt Benefit Sooiety. There were 4 cancellations by i dissolution daring the year. I ‘‘There were," says the Registrar,"a la: ■ -

The warning conveyed in my report of last year has been responded to favorably, and notices prescribed by the Aot and regulations have been forwarded for registration more promptly. There is, however, still room for improvement.’’ Borne cf the returns received, on being examined, were found to oontain entries that were defective, incorrect, oontradio* tory, or not in accordance with law. The total number of members in the 479 lodg.s whesa returns are tabulated was 47,902 at the end of 1904, the inorease for the year beiDg 2049.
Tbo total funds of the societies at the end of 1904 amounted to £936,388, made up of £858,624 to the credit of eiok and funeral funds and £77,764 in medical and management funds. The average oapitai per member was £l9 15s lid. The amount disbursed ia sick pay daring 1904 was £48,537, while the funeral - benefits paid amounted to £10,098. The rato of interest realised from investments, whilst showing a Batiafaotory average in the aggregate, discloses considerable fluctuation, and the need for more consistent care in the investments is urged. The unauthorised transfers of various sums from the sick aod funeral funds to the management fund is referred to by the Registrar, who expresses a hope that the amounts will be restored as soon as possible,
