SCHOOL TEACHERS.
THE GRADING SYSTEM.
(Per Press Association.) Auckland, lasi night, The system of gcadiDg school teaohers by inspectors was discussed at a meeting of the Board of Education. In pursuance of notice of motion Mr Peacook moved that inspectorial grading of all teaohers when completed should be open to the inspection of any teacher at the office of the Board, and that until completed euch grading should not necessarily govern selection by the Board of teachers for promotion. Qe said it was absolutely necessary that the teachers should be j satisfied with the way in whioh promotions were made ; otherwise the Board might lose some of its best teachers. The Chairman said he was uncertain as to what the effoot would be if teachers were allowed to inspect gradings. A system of logrolling would be opened up. If grading were confined to reports a teacher could never be graded beyond his present position. The records of a teacher would not show his qualification for a higher position. A man might be a splendid first assistant and yet not suitable for a headmastership. Inspector Petrie said he oonsidered the | adoption of tho proposal would bo of no assistance in grading. His own feeling was in foot that it would be very inadviß- [ able to allow teaohers to know each other’s grading. The Board ultimately resolved to defer consideration until next meeting, and in the meantime to instruot the staff and inspectors to report giving their opinions as to the advisableness of the principle involved.
