INSURANCE LIABILITIES

'(Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night, In an address at the losuranoe Institute, Mr Simpsou, general manager of the Phctnix Assurance Company, dealt with the question of tbe liability of fire insurance companies for losses incurred through the earthquakes at San Franoiseo. He did not think there was any ground for

apprehension that companies operating in New Ssaland would be involved, The value which had been destroyed by the earthquake could not be olaimed under the fire policy if the value remained after the shook, and was subsequently destroyed by fire. Liability would depend upon the terms of oontraot. Almost invariably there was a olause inserted exempting tbe oompanies from liability for loss arising from fires occasioned by earthquake. In some States in America the Legislature had interfered with the oenditions of fire poiioies, but he did not know of anything in California which would prevent the usual restrictions as to earthquake loss being availed of.
