James Erskine Patrick, recently clerk in the Magistrate's Court at Marfcon and Bulls, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to-day to six charges of embezzling Court fines and I fees, totalling £lB 4s. The total deficiencies on the books amount to £149. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court at Wellington for sentence. I Palmerston North, last night, A four-roomed house in Eitzherbert street was destroyed by fire this morning. The cottage was the scene of the recent tragedy here, in which a horse-trainer named F. Murfitt was shot, and Mrs Harris attempted sui- | cide. . It has been untenanted since then. The building was insured for £IOO in the Manchester office. Invercargill, la t night. R. F. Montague, for quitting the colony with money that should have been divided amongst his creditors, was sentenced to the maximum term, six months’ hard labor. Accused left the colony under an assumed name and was arrested in Hobart.
