COASTAL STEAM SERVICE
DEPUTATION TO ME MILLS.
(Special to Times ) 3 Auckland, last night. P.ior to loaving Auckland, a deputation of Auckland merchants waited upon Mr Mils, managing .direotor of the Union Steamship service, in regard to the coastal service, specially urging a regular connection between Auckland and Gisborne.
The deputation consisted of Meßsrs M. Clark, S. Natban, D. 15. Caldwell, A, B. I Robertson, A. J. Entrioan, M, M. MoOallum, R, Burns, and others. The gentlemen mentioned, who repressed the Shipping Committee of the Auckland Chamber of Oommerce, urged upon Mr Mills the necessity of eetablishi ing a moro regular eeryioo between Auckland and the Eaßt Coast, and particularly with Gisbmne, where there was very heavy trsffio. Severe complaints were made io regard to the protect service. It was pointed out that great difficu'ty was experienced in fulfi ling orders owing to the irregular manner in which the Company’s- boats wero running to Gisborne. Tbo Haupiri, which oalled at all Coastal ports, did Dot meet the requirements of tbo Gisborne tcado, and the' Company in their own interests should take other means of establishing direct communication with Gisborne.
Mr Mills, in replying, thanked the deputation for btiDging the matter under bis notioe. The Union Company had for a long time had under consideration the requirements of the Gisborne trade, but the difficulties in regard to river traffic at that end had prevented anything being done. Ho hoped in the near future to arrange for a service of boats, with a light diaugbt, that would meet with tho requirements of tho trade,
The deputation thanked Mr Mills for his consideration of the matter.
