Several Auckland contractors arrived by the Tarawera yesterday for the purpose of making inquiries in regard to the Gisborne water supply oontraot. It is expected that there will be from twelve to fifteen tenders for the work. Code addiesses for inland telegrams may now be registered. The fee for registering oode addresses is the same aB that on cable telegrams, viz, 10s per annum, if d'ffercnt fl par annum ; the monthly fee to cover both. Registration is ss.

Kit ire arrived from Auckland yesterday afternoon with a full general cargo, including 600 bags of c:ment, The vessel sheltered for eighteen hours at Tolago during the heaviest part of the recent storm, but had a very rough trip down from Tolago yesterday. The vessel is timed to sail for coastal ports and Auckland on the 25th inst. Cargo will be reoeivad daily, and up to 4 p.m. on the day of sailing. At the meeting of householders for the Gisborne school district last evening, several gentlemen declined nomination on the ground that they were prospective candidates for tho districts of Kaiti and Te Hapara (Milltown). The Chairman stated that it was probable that before the next meeting of householders schools would be established at the places mentioned. An offender for drunkenness at the j imaru Court last Thursday morning created a diversion. Upon being asked by the Bench if he had any statement to make, he said i “Yes, put the sergeant in the box; a man can be ‘prosecuted’ without being ‘persecuted ’” An explanation elicited the fact that accused had gone to the police station (drunk) to make a complaint against the force, whereupon he was arrested.
