SHOOTING TRAGEDY,

REVENGE OF A NEGLECTED MISTRESS.

Pa’mareton North, last night. Further details available indicate that the tragedy was due to tbe jealousy of Mrs Harris, with whom Murfhf bad been living for the past fifteen years, of Ada Davidson, his niece, who since Murfitt came to Palmerston has been living at Hokowhitu with him, Mrs Harris occupying a sepirato establishment, where the occurrence took place. The jealousy first became apparent, tbe employes of Murfitt state, at Aacklaud, and increased daring the past few months. Mrs Harris was heard to warn him on numerous occasions as to his conduct, and shp also repeatedly asked to be allowed to go away and earn her own living Bfc)p wished Murfitt to sell one of his trotting horees andttart her in a boarding house, but with strong perversity he refused to permit her to leave him, though his the employes who Had ‘be'en with Murfitt some years. Mrs Harris progressed favorably during the night, and there is now a probability of her recovering. Iq a statement made to tbe doctor prior to an operation at the hospital last night, Mrs Harris admitted tbe deed, and asoribed the cause to a quarrel with Murfitt, who intended leaving her to live with his niece. The inquest opened this afternoon, and was adjourned till April 6tb, the police stating that thero was every probability of the woman recovering. j
