PERMITTING DRUNKENNESS.
(Fes Press Association.); Oamaru, last night. In connection with the case of the mwi Brett recently burned to death at Maheno while intoxicated, Edmund O’Donnell, licensee of the hotel, was proseouted for ' serving drink to Brett while intoxicated, and permitting drunkenness on his premises. At the inquest the evidence waa to the effeot that the wife of the licensee served drinks to the deoeaßed while in> toxioated, and also two bottles of beer, at tbe time. He was. assisted home, and shortly after was burnt to death in his cottage, When the oese was called morning the police applied for an ment on tho ground of " the mysterious disappearance ” of the principal witness for tbe prosecution. An adjournment Was granted till the 28<h inst. .
