AN AUCKLAND SENSATION.
DRAMATIC ARBEST. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night. William Phillips, a young married man, waß brought before Mr Kettle, 8.M., at Ihe Police Court this morning, charged with drunkenness and at'empted suicide. Accused, upon whose throat was visible a slight soar as the result cl his aot, was arrested by Conslable Cox under somewhat dramat’c oiic imstanoes. Mrs Phillips, his wife, had beeu obliged: to seek police protection earlier in the day against the violence of her husbsnl, and a o:n----stable was standing ta'king to her on the verandah of accused's reeidecce, when he was observed to be approaohiog on the other sido of the street, and to step within the shadow of the bii ldicg immediately j opposite. Cox wrested away a with which Phillips was sawing st his own threat, pinioned bis arms, and afterwards to k h'm fii ths station. His Worship suggested that the man should be remanded for a week in order that .bo m'ght be medically examined, as it seemed inertd-bla that anyone could have so persistently act.d as accused had unless there were some mental defioienoy. To this the Sergeant agreed, and Phillips who Lad throughout maintained an unmoved demeanor, was accordingly led off on a week’s remand.
