INDIGNANT ENGLISHMAN AND INCOME TAX.

(Per Press Association.) Palmerston North, last night.

Lissaman, a local chemist, was fined £2 and oosts 28s for refusing to allow the Inoome Tax officer to examine the book debts. He said he had filled in his returns to the Department to the best of his ability, and he looked upon the presence of an officer of the Department under the circumstances as an insult. He also wished to protest as an Englishman against the intolerable tyranny and indignity placed upon a man by such a law, whioh he bad no idea of, and could not understand how it bad been framed. A person might just as well be in Russia. The S.M. suggested that every one might not ke as honest as Mr Lissaman in their returns. Tho Department might be defrauded, and that no doubt was the object of the authority given. The position taken up in the matter was quite wrong, and the bcoks should have been produoed. The penalty provided was not less than £2, and not more than £lO, so that it was possible a case like this might be very serious. Replying to the court, Mr I Clarke said this was the first oase of this na’ure breught by the Department. I
