CHARITABLE AID BOARD

The Board met last night before the Borough Council meeting, there being present : Messrs J. Townley (Chairman), Whinray, Webb, W. Miller and F. J. Lysnar. The Borough solicitor, Mr E. J. Chrisp, wrote that since the claim of £43 Bs, made by the Auckland Board in regard to John Ryan, had been placed in his hands in November last, he had been endeavoring to shift the responsibility off the Board’s shoulders but without success, and now Messrs Heskett and Richmond threatened to sue if the amount were not passed forthwith. The Supreme Court case of Otago Benevolent Institution v. Southland Hospital was conclusively against the Board, and upon the [ strength of that authority he advised payment. He had also consulted Mr J. C. Martin on the point and he was of the same opinion. The caretaker reported there were 12 inmates at present in the Home. Gifts were acknowledged with thanks as follows : Fruit, anonymous; bread, Mangapapa School pienie. Tbe private secretary for tbe Minister of Justice wrote, statiDg that he was direoted by the Minister of Justice to acknowledge receipt of letter of 17th imst, drawing attention to the.hardship entailed on email Boards in providing for the families of persons imprisonsd for crime, and to inform the Board that the matter had been referred to tbe Minister in charge of hospitals and Charitable Aid for consideration. Mr Whinray said bo hoped to see the Board-formulate some suggestion for dealing with the matter. The usual accounts were passed for payment. - The visiting committee, Messrs F. J. Lysnar and Miller, reported that everything was working satisfactorily, and suggested certain improvements. It was decided to get a chair on wheels for {he iomates.
