NUHAKA NORTH

’(From Our Own Correspondent.)

February 11

During the past week rain fell continuously and all rivers and creeks have been more or leas in a flooded state. The roads too in many places are in a deplorable condition, and heavy wheel traffic is completely stopped. So muoh rain at this time of the year, when the roads are generally in good order, is a great drawback to the distriot. Thoreis a considerable number of bales of wool to be oarted away, and tons of station requisites dnd stores to be brought to the district, and fears axe entertained that unless the weather soon clears the roads will not 1 b.e passable for this work to be efleoted before the winter sets in. All station work is also much retarded by the inolemenpy|of tho weather, and although thore is an abundance of foad in the pastures tho numb:r of prime freezers selected from the flocks and sent away so far is not up to the average, but a week or two oi fine weathor would no doubt improve matters in this respect. Some of the early town bush oloarings are looking gteoD, and those set'lers who were fortunate in gotting their turnip seed sown beforo tho rain commenced should be in a cheorful moon, unloss indeed they foel that thoy are getting too much of a good thing. Tho contractor for the work of plaoing metal on tho Morore'Tarewa road mado good progress with the work during the flee weather. The road now has a coat of metal on from the Tunauui crossing to opposite Mr Sloan’a gate, and I understand that it is intended to continue the work up tho hill to Mr Shaw’s property. The Wairca County Council should endoavour to have a portion of the special grant, or the funds available for melalliDg this road, spent in the work of plaomg the metal on tbo worst part 3 which undoubtedly can be located between Maogatoto and the Bluff, for unless this work is done the metalled road below the Bluff will not bo of much benefit to tho Tatewa and other settlers during the winter months.
