A BANQUET ARRANGED.
There was a largo Mid representative attondsnoo at tho meeting called by the Ciunty Obahman yoßiorday to oonsldor tho advisability of inviting tho Premier to visit tho distiob with a view oi bringing
tho requirements of tho East Coast more prominently boforo tho Government. Tho Chaiiinin (Cnp'ain Tucker) said that the ouly way to bring tho wants of tbo district under tho notice of Minis’.ors wa3 to invito them to visit tho district, and whilst
hero to show them round as much as possible. Ho oould not disguiso from himselt tho foot that the dntriot had boon sadly negleetod in tho past; it bad never received just'oe, and they got baok nothing in proportion to what thsy contributed to tho revenue. , ... Mr A. F. Mattho.vs said that ho had been partly instrumental in calling the meeting that day and ho hoped they would take stops to a-suro a ■ visit from tho Premier nod other Ministers. At prosent
it was a oaso of “ out of sight out of mind with Ministers, and a visit from thorn would bo productive of much good. Ho moved that a banquet should bo tendered to Mr Carroll, and that Ministers be mvitod to attend, also that a public mooting be held. , ' ' , Mr W. L Clayton seconded the motion. They wore all, he said, aware of the shameful manner in whioh tho distriot had been neglootod in tho past, and anything tnndinrv (in Kvtnrf fthflllfi fill iffIDrOVODIGDt
tending fio bring about on impiruvwu4cu« .m this respeot had his support. Ho seconded the motion because it was supported by the County Chairman and a membor of I the Counoil. but at tho same time he was not altogether in sympathy with it. He thought that it showed a considerable want of confidence in their member when I they had te propose a feast of champagne I before they oould reoeive any attention. On a provious occasion they had banquetted mombers and caused a great deal of dissatisfaction throughout the distriot. T-r ,» l» :l - An n ArtmTilimpnl to I
He thought it was a poor compliment to the Ministers, but as the County Chairman I and others deemed it neoessary he would seooud the resolution. Mr W. L. Reea pointed out that it was : customary in all English-speaking ooun- j trio 3to banquet distinguished visitors. It was a means towards the end they sought. The Mayor was thoroughly ia accord with the proposal. _He would do all he M oould to make -it a suocess. When they t
got tbe Ministers in the d:s',riot they could show them round, and be thought some things had been said at tho meeting that afternoon whioh might well have been left unsaid. Mr W. D. Lysnar heaitily supported the
proposal, aa also did Mr Sievwcight. After further disousaion, it was decided that a complimentary dinner be tendered lo the Hon. E. J. S9ddon and Hon. James Carroll; alao that an invitation should be extended to other Ministers to attend the
function. The following committee was appointed to make all arrangements His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. Townley), County
Chairman, Captain Tucker, and Messrs W. D. Lysnar, T. Holden, J. Caesar, J. Clark, and C. J. Parker.
