A youth named Wilfred Hannan, aged sixteen, who was on the way from Greymouth to Wellington, and spending a day or two here, went to bathe in the Matai river this evening with others Being unable to swim he walked to the top end of a deep hole to oross the. river, but got out of his. depth and sank: He was not missed for a few minutes, when the boys searobed and brought him cut. Efforts at resuscitation were made for a loDg time, also by Drs Andrews aod Lucas, but unavailingly. An inquest will be held tomorrow. Deceased was the son of a wellknown solicitor.
