A WILFUL DEED.
ATTEMPT TO DERAIL A TRAIN,
(Per Press Association.)
Invercargill, last night. A deliberate attempt to derail tho South bound express betwosu Kaihiku and Waiwera was made last night, bars of iron being laid across tho malals, also a mile pest a litils distance away, tho latter beiDg lashed with wire secured to wedges driven into a sleeper. Tho driver, Moloney, felt the engine pass over the obn structions, and pulled up sharp. No damage was done and tho train proceeded
after the wire and broken post wore taken from under tho gear of the engine. The railway at the place tuns through a flit. It is said that two horsemen galloped
away just before the train passed, but the police are inclined to thiak that the act was tbc work of boys. Tho method of fixing the obstructions indicates older heads, and some experience.
Dunedin, last night. What nppears to have been a deliberate attempt to wreck tho second express train to Invercargill was mado on Wednesday night. Just before reaching a small bridge about a mile from Waiwo.a, the passengers were startled by a heavy jolt. Tho brakes were applied, but baforo tbo train stopped another jolt was felt. Exun'natiou showed that the first jolt was caused by a fish plate being stuck end up bo- j tween two lengths of rails. Tho second was caused by a milo post being laid across the rails, This was jammed in tho bogie wheels of tho ongiue, and it took some 15 minutos to oxtracS it But for the promptitude of the driver in pulling up it is probable the second ob.-truction would have thrown the train eff tho rails. The matter has bton placed in tho bands of the police.
