Mr Doakin, at the Exhibition luncheon, referred to the necessity of increased immigration to develop the oouotry. He said the Commonwealth and States in this matter must be closely, intimately associated. If tbe States would make land easily available to satisfy the inflow of immigrants, and oome to an agreement in regard to the manner they would receive immigrants, the Federal Government would be prepared to subject a Bill next session to ask Parliament to vote liberal subsidies, advertise Australia in England, and bring out suitable immigrants at oheap faros, thus competing with Canada. Government were preparing a scheme for bounties for the encouraging of new pro duots. The States would thus be inspired to advance to the conquest of the great interior at present practically unoccupied. It was a great national question. He made tbe States a praotical offer, hoping that it would lead to practical business.
