RAILWAY SMASH.
EXCURSION TRAIN DERAILED. By telegraph,; Press Ass’n, Copyright Melbourne, Jan. 29. The acoident was caused by an excursion train on the narrow gauge line from Femtcee Gully to Gembrook becoming derailed.
The train consisted ol eight covered trucks, containing 250 Melbourne excursionists. It was rounding a curve when the engine left the line, dragging with it three truoks crammed with passengers, The eDgine plunged some distance up the embankment, and fell over the side. A scene of wild excitement took place. When the passengers were extracted from the splintered trucks, it was found that about 70 bad reoeived injuries, a majority of which were Blight. The most serious were Mrs Cox and Ernest Gleeson, injured internally ; Mrs GleesOD, a damaged leg; T. Russell, fractured arm ; Driver Sheehan, fractured wrist and badly out. Two or three others are suffering very severely from shook. A train despatched from Melbourne brought excursionists and wounded back, a great crowd wa'tiDg until early morning at Spencer street station to witness their arrival.
