ORPHANAGE SCANDAL.
THE DEFENCE
(Pm Press Association.) Christchurch, last night. The Orphanage enquiry was rammed this morning. Evidenoe- wa3 led to show that fhe Matron, Mrs Carpenter, was extremely popular with the children, and that they suffered no hardships. Several of the ohildren gave evidenoe that they had plenty of food and were well treated. When on eifeoce punishment they were allowed to apeak to the Matron and assistants, and the. punishment was not very bad, because they seldom obeyed it. None of them remembered Mrs Carpenter calling the ohildren bad names or sweariog at them. Dr. Crook and other assistants at the hospital also gave evidenoe that children had been under their oharge from time to time, and their never saw any evidences of neglect. They made no complaint. Later.—At the Waltham Orphanage enquiry to-day Frankie Hammond, aged 14, Sarah Smith, aged 17L and Maud Stewart, aged 19£ years, former inmates of the Orphanage, gave evidence that they were kindly treated at the institution, and Mrs Carpenter had not called the ohildren bad names. Members of the institution's committee of the Charitable Aid Board stated that Mrs Carpenter had carried out her duties satisfactorily. No restriction was placed on her in the matter of food. -The enquiry will bo resumed to-day.
