THE MODERN MAGICIAN. e-r—ei One of the moat fascinatingly weird ai mystifying performances was staged ( Saturday night by Czßrny, the renowni oonjurer and modern magioian. After bright overture the curtain raised, and tl vast audience was at onoe delightfully in pressed with a beautiful allegorical eoei representing Mephisto’s palace by ti Pyramids. The attendants of the mag cian being robed in rich and gorgeot Eastern costume*, under the rays of so limelight effect, completed a wonderfull dazzling speotacle. Czerny, who he an excellent stage appearance, com menoed his attractive programme by turn entitl'd "The handkerchief i: trouble,” which was a Rplendid trie' manipulated with ease and neatness tha at once stamped Czerny as a conjuro with few equals. The item, “ A flight o birds,” was one of the prettiest in the firs part of the programme, the magioian in i mystifying manner transmitting a numbei of birds from one cage to another, a weird turn was the introduction of "Go G.d,” tho Egyptian ekuil and wondrous soothsayo-, which held the audience spell, bound by its revelation of startling facts *' The birth of Springtime ” was an item much enjoyed by the audienoe, who though completely bewildered, wrre de' lighted to enthusiasm. The second part .of the programme was opened by a doscriptive song, “ The shade of the old apple tree ” (with colored illustrations) which were sweetly sung by Miss M.' Topping, who poasrssos ao excellent ! soprano voice. A set of spectacular and humorous films were exhibited by a tibloauseopp, the pictures being very cleat and keenly appreciated One of the most marvellous illusions of tho programme was the «Levitation qf Princoss Astra.” Cz r rny introduces thfe Princess in a hypnotic condition, and* without supports or viaiblo wires raises hrr horizontally in mid-air, where she remains to the wonderment of the whole audience Tho Mieses Topping aod Lynct‘, who assist Czerny in maDy turns and illusions scored a great success in their graceful Japanese danc' 1 , and well merited the double encore. Special comment should re made of Ihe young ladies’ fan drill j t his dance. After a number of humorouE uurns, in which several well-known Gis* bornitts from the audience fruitlessly endeavor to disentargle or solve the mysteries, Czerny concluded a most enjoy, able evening by performiog his Oriental" [ mys’ery, entitled *• A Legend of Persia ” which undoubtedly beffled the audience and proved that Czrrny had more than amply justified tho high reputa'ion which preceded him. Wo heartily recommend all those who have not seen Czerny, and are desirous of enjoying an en'e. tainment which is novel and marked by refinement wit, and wonder, to patronise this great and marvellous magician.
