CAPTAIN SOUTHGATE’S EVIDENCE. {Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night. At the Marine inquiry, Southgate, captain of the Kapanui, said when almost abreast of the Gael his red light wart out. He ordered the boy to relight it immediately, and steered to the starboard across tho wako of the Gael, to avoid the Claymore, which was oomiog end od. He did not whistle beoauso the Claymore,'whist!ed, apparently once, indicating he wbs taking the opposite course. If the Claymore’s captain said he kept a straight course witness coull not contradict him, Hp knew by going to starboard be would show no light, but expected that the Claymore would understand that bis red light had gone out. He himself observed article 25 to keep to tho starboard, regarding Auck land Harbor as a narrow channel, but ooujd not undertake to till tales of others who did not. Ho had only drunk two glasses of liquor in his life, Id a former nautical Court for a collision ho was exonerated.
