A Dunedin man named Rose, visiting Auckland for the benefit of his health, was found dead in his bed at a boarding house this morning. A fire broko out in the bunkers of the Devnnport Ferry Company’s steamer Durham early this morning. It damaged 80 lifebelts and destroyed a quantity of coal.
The interprovincial chess congress opens hero on Boxing Day, and extends for ten days. There are thirteen entries, but only one from the South Island, as follows : Auckland, Grierson, Miles, Jowitt, Freemao; Hawke’s Bay, Can*; Wanganui, Rutherford ; Wairarapa, Kummer ; Hutfc, J. Mason ; Wellington, Davis, the present champion, James, Soiling, Barnes; Otago, Edwards.
