MAORI ELECTION
APIRANA NGATA DEFEATS WI
PERE, Keen intorest was taken in the e'eotion for the Eastern Maori electorate hold yesterday, and the returns to hand give Apirana lsgata such a lead that it is not likely tho result will bo altered. Along tbo coast a most lively interest was manifested in tho proceedings, and the tremendous mojority obtained by Ngata from Whaogma to Hick’s Bay was a matter of
much jubilation amongst the natives. At Whareponga, Eeporua, and anetbor place
Ngata obtained block votes of 43, 23, and 47 respectively, whilst at Waiomatatini tbo voting was Ngata 102, Wi Pero 1. An
interesting story depicting Maori gallantry is related in regard to this ono vote. It is said to have been cast by Mr Ngota’s father, who, knowiug that his eon was to have a block vote, felt that as a matter cf respect for tho retiring member it should not bo said that the old parl : amec't triau had no friend at all at Waiomatatini. This kiudly spirit does not enter into European contests. The returns up to 11 o’clock last evening were as follows : Coast, Whacgara to Hick’s Bay (com-pht;),-Ngata 083, Wi Pore 330, Mohi 15, Ihaia 2, Paalri 6, ICohcro 27.

There are 28 returns yet to come in, but it is not expected that Ngata’s lead will be much reduced, for whilst bo will lose at some perilous of the distriot he will make
it up iu otbere. At some of tbo plices to oomo in Mohi is likely to get a majority, ana this will tend t) a fuitbor splitting up of the vetae. Wo can congratulate the olcctota of the dis'rict on the return of Mr Ngala, who will ably assist tbo 800. Jas. Carroll in forwarding tho interests of the East Coast generally.
