SLY-GROG SELLING AT ASHBURTON.
A SERIES OF CHARGES.
. The Ashburton Magietrafc’s Couit wa occupied on Saturday last hearing another batch of sly-grog cases. Considerable local interest was taken in tho proceedings, and the Coart-room was throDgod with speota’ors. , , Samuel Alexander kept a boa-ding-house in Ashburton no-license district; served whisky in an inner room ; he bad been twice previously convicted. —Imprisonment for two months. Julia Hyland, board'ngbouse-keeper in Ashburton noflicense district, supplied liquor on tho sly.—Fined £lO. H. P. Milsom served out whisky to men w ho‘‘ shouted ” thrioe.—Fined £l5O. The convictions were obtaibed through special policemen brought from Hawke's Bay aid the West Coast. Seven other cases were heard —one was dismissed, whilst fines of £lO and-upwards were imposed in others. A number of other cases are pending.
