THE WAIAPU STAKES.
“ Early Bird ” send 3 the following foreoast of the Waiapu Stakes:—When the barrier was lifted at Haogaroa, Prohibitionist and Reformer were the quickest to move, whilst the Liberal pair, Mahutonga and Audacity were slow to face the heavy going. Racing through Waerenga-o-kuri Prohibitionist bad a clear two lengths, of his stable companion, but on the long run to Patutahi Reformer gradually reduced the gap, and passed under the floral arch at Repongaere seven clear lengths of his opponent. Once on the railway the hard going was all in favor of the top-weight, whilst Audacity also made a forward movement. As Karaka was approached the field dosed up, and there was nothing to spare as the quartette swept past Host Allen’s. Reformer shook himself clear of his opponents as they raced for the Motu, Mahutonga being eeoond, and Probib'tionist third, whilst Audacity was thus early showing signs of distress. Reformer increased his lead ai the long bush stretch to Te Araroa was negotiated, and cheered by the encouraging sm'lce of tho Bay of Plentyitee, was holding his own as the Coastal run was entered upon. Here Mahutonga made a forward move, ana dispite all opposition of the Conservative gelding, was on terms with the Reformer as the Walpiro post wss pa3aod, whilst Prohibitionist and Audacity wore hopeleasly in the rear. Tho favoiito had all the best of the run to the Gisborne river, and coming away with a well sustained run through the main thoroughfare, gained the favorable decision of Judge Hogau by 25 leDgtbs from Reformer, Prohibitionist and Audacity being distanced, for which they were deservedly penalised.
