Newspapers warmly appreciate Now Zealand’s offer of a ship load of food for tho unemployed. General Booth, in an interview, said that an unemployed fund on the basis of oharity was of no permanent good. If the appeal next year ;on same basis were repeated an even larger sum would be re« quired. He would not pay unemployed ia money, lest they should go to the public house, but would pay a rent of 6s or a week and for groceries and fool. Ho would do this foe the sake of their wiveß and children.
Pec Press Association. Wanganui, Saturday. Subscription lists are being started here among the school children for the benefit of ohildren in the famine-stricken districts of Japan. It is probable the movement will be extended to schools all over the Wanganui eduoation district, and a good ] sum is expected to ne realised. Wellington, Saturday. The President of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, referring to the Premier’s suggestion that New Zealand should send food to the British unemployed and famishing Japanese, says he is of opinion that acceptance of a cargo of foodstuffs would be inconsistent with the dignity of the Mother Country, but suggests that the Mayors throughout the colony be asked to invito cash contributions to the Queen’s fund for British unemployed, and tnat inquiry bo male by cable whether assistance to Japan is required. He is also afraid that the adoption of the Premiec’B suggestion would De taken as an advertising scheme.
