BLUE SPEC WINS MELBOURNE CUP. A BRILLIANT FINISH.

Melbourne, Nov. 7. ‘ There was thorough typical Australian weather for the Cop day. About 100,000 people were present, the gubernatorial parties being largely represented. In the Cup race Blue Spec, who was ridden by Bullock (son of a Victorian constable) iu Tod .’Sloan style, came with a brilliant ran at the finish, and soon settled the pretensions of Soot Free and Tartan, who were fighting for supremacy, before the West Australian appeared on the scene.
The results were : Hurdles—Florin .1, Adjuster 2, Neglect 8. Six others started. Betting: 2 to 1 Florin. Won by two lengths. Time 5.65. Railway Handicap—Billingsgate 1, Mairp 2, Deoollette 8. Thirteen others ran. Betting: 2to 1 Billingsgate. Won by two lengths. Time, 1.15. Nursery Handicap Port Arthur 1, Castaway 2, Yillah 3. Twelve others ran. Betting: 7to 1 against the winner. Won by 2£ lengths. Time 1.2 J.

Blue Speo ... ... l Soot Free ... ... ... . 2 , Tartan... ... ... ... 3 All the final acceptors started but Troys own, Jargoon, Thackeray, Scotland, and Cirouit. The betting was 3 to 1 against Tartan, 6 to 1 Maniapoto, 7 to 1 Warroo and Soot Free, 12 to 1 Blue Spec, A good start was effected, Marvel Looh and Bitnoda being prominent at the start, but they died away early in the race. Overdale, Soot Free, and Maniapoto were in the van as the .field approached I the turn. Here Maniapoto was going very strong, but the effort told its tale, and he | died away whon the finish came. Overdale, Soot Free, and Tartan kept going down the straight, and the last- | named pair appeared to have the raoe between them until Blue Speo and Fabrio shot out. The latter’s effort was only spasmodic, but not so that of Blue Speo, who out down the leaders in rare style, and won brilliantly by three parts of a length. There was a distance of half a {jngth between sooond and third. Fabrio was fourth. Maniapoto finished tenth. The time was 8.27 J. Steeplechase—Bosun 1, 2, Abdullah 3. Twelve others started. Betting!
