Carroll’s committee last night reference was made to the meeting to be addressed to-night by Mr H. H. Wall. Tho opinion of all present was that every effoit Bhould be made to secure for Mr Wall a fait and impartial hearing, and it was resolved that all supporters of Mr Carroll who attended the meeting do not interrupt in any way, aud accord io him the same fair treatment as had been given to Mr Clayton, any points j requiring a reply being left for Mr Carroll I to deal with. • Tho first heat for trophies presented to the Gisborne Rowing Club by Mr J. A. Harding was rowed last evening over a course from Harris’ bend to tho end of the wharf. There was a large gathering of spectators, and the crews were stroked by Swinnerton and Donkin. Swinnerton got the best of the start, and held a slight advantage to the Kaiti bridge. From there a real good taoe ensued, but the veteran lasted longest, and won a hard-fougbt raoe by a quarter of a length. Mr A. D. Robinson was judge, and Mr A. E. Smith starter. Two heats will be rowed this evening. At the Polioe Court yesterday morning James O’Dowd sued Ge t. Smith for JE3, value of goods sold by pltiatiff at auotion, add damages. Attwood, Mrs Whits, and Thos. Smith. After hearing the evidenoe, which was of a conflicting nature, His Worship awarded judgment to defendant with costs, £1 10s Mr Stock appeared for plaintiff, and Mr T. Alston Coloman for defendant.
