The Council of the London Chamber ol Commerce resolved to try and form a coh> junction with other chambers and a central joiot committee with the object of calling attention to the question of Imperial defence. , Mr Austen Chamberlain, speaking at Btirohley, declared that neither Mr BaU four nor the Government wished to place the fiscal question in a secondary _ place at the elections, for they regarded it 'aa‘ the greatest issueto be submitted. Personally, be oould conceive of very considerable preference being given to the colonies on wines, spirits, moat, dairy prodace, market garden produce, and other articles than corn, but he valued closer union so highly that he was willing to give even a small tax on oorn. ; '• i '\
