RAILWAY SERVICE.
INCREASED PAY AND SHORTER HOURS. (Per Presa Association.) Wellington, last night. In the House to-day Sir Joseph Ward made a statement in regard to increases it was proposed to make in the pay of railway employees. It was, he said, intended to grant an increase of sixpence par day to shunters, porters, laborers, cleaners, platelayers, linemen, and many other lowor grade workmen, and an increase of Is per day to surfacemen. , This would affect 4899 meD. In addition -it jWas intended to grant to engineers, firemen, and guards, eto., an eight hours’ day instead of nine hours. Other concessions would also be made, and in future all men in the railway workshops would be paid fori, nightly instead of monthly. This latter conoession alone.involved an extra vo’.e this year of i£9500, and the total concessions represented a sum of jE65,973 per annum. He considered4his large increase was fully justified, and it met-with the unanimous approval of the Cabinet.
