At Hastings the case Borough Council Counoil v. Knight Bros., for. compelling defehdants to connect with the sower, was settled out of Court on defendants paying oosts and empowering tho Counoil to do ,ho work.

At the Polioe Court yesterday morning a young man named Arthur Joseph Hogg was charged on remand with misappropriating a gold watoh and chain, the property of Samuel Mao Murray. . Aooused, . who was represented by Mr Stock, pleaded guilty, and was remanded until this morning for the probationer’s report. There was a very large attendance at the races yesterday.. A heavy shower fell after tho first race, and being followed by a little rain later on, some of the enjoy-j mont was taken from the outing. The. rain, did not interfere with the racing, everything being got off to time; but it must havo been vexing to the ladies, the display of spring oostumes being the finest seen at any recent gathering. At Ashburton cases against two tradesmen for issuing bogus summonses without an imprint on them, with the object of: collecting accounts, were dismissed. The Magistrate held that the praotice was objectionable, but that defendants were not liable, as the documents did not come within the meaning of the Aot. If the prosecution thought the case of sufficient importance be was willing to submit it to the Supreme Court, as the custom was muoh in vogue throughout the colony. Tbe Health Department and the Inveroargill Gounoil are in oonfliot. Dr Ogston required an insanitary dwelling to be pulled down. The Connoil deolined, on the ground that the dwelling was fit for habitation, and it would be an injustice to tho owner. Dr Ogston writes demanding immediate compliance, otherwise the Department will take action. The Council resolved that while anxious to seoond the* efforts of the Department to require the destruction of tho buildings in question, it would be an aot of injustice to whioh they could not bo a party. The sitting of tbe Native Appellate Court was concluded yesterday, When tbe Court had formally adjourned several representatives addressed the Court, expressing’ their - satisfaction with the decisions arrived at, and especially at the oelerity with which ’the Judges who had come from outside had got through their work. Tbe natives hoped that tbe next sitting of the Appellate Court would not be held at such a distant date, some of the oases just dealt with having had to wait for about five years. Judge Edger leaves for Auckland by the steamer Manuka this afternoon, while Judge Jackson Palmer remains until next week to hear a Land Court oase in whioh Judge Jones has been professionally interested. ,

The large wharepuni at Waihirerc was burned down on Saturday, says the Wairoa Guardian. Mrs Patu had left her child asleep in the house and an a'arm being given, ehe rescued the child, and shortly after the flames were seen inside.
