MR CLAYTON’S MEETING.
[To the Editor Gisborne Times.
I Sir,—As a strong Oppositionist I went to the meeting on Thursday evening, feelI ing that if Mr Clayton acquitted himself | creditably he would have my support- I counted the use of the word “ honor ” I about a hundred times, and listened with interest to the quotation from the Pubiio Bevenues Act. Finding that Mr Clayton only quoted sufficient of the Act to convey I a glaring misrepresentation as to the position of the Audit Office and the TreaI sury, I muet at once say that he is not a candidate for us. A big latitude should certainly'be allowed a man in attacking the Government, but when he only partially quotes an Act, thepoby misrepresenting the position of the AuditorrGeneral, it is high time for people of Conservative inßtiDcts to raise a protest. Mr Clayton I did not know until 1 heard him. Mr Wall, tbe other Conservative candidate, 1 do know, but have not yet heard him speak. After Thursday eveuiDg’s meeting, in common with many others, I must decide in favor of Mr Wall,'whose pub liahed address is entirely in accord with the views we hold,— ; l am, etc., i •r r - SETTLER I
