LABOR LAWS.

HOW AUSTRALIA IS TROUBLED. By telegraph. Press Ass’n, Copyright London, Oct 11. The Timea based a paragraph, headed " Englishmen excluded from Australia,” upon a newspaper cutting sent from Melbourne, giving official documents in the oase of the groom Gooderham.

Mr WiBO wrote a letter to the Times, in which he characterised the story as absurd and a false “ stinlcing-fieh ” yarn. He deolared that a careful search failed to reveal the official documents referred to.

Tho Timed eited from a newspaper the text of Mr Coghlan’s certificate aod Messrs Dalgety and Co.’s letter on the subject, remarking that it was extremely difficult to learn Australia’s real mind. The Timeß asserted that apparently authoritative

declarations in one Bense and then personal experiences in the opposite sense made il difficult to get at the truth.

Sydney, Ootober 12,

. Goodetham, the groom, oame to Sydney from England with horses. Before leaving England he wbb furnished with a letter from Dalgety and Co., stating that as he waß going out under oontraot he would Dot be allowed to stay in Australia, and at the same time furnisbiog him with a certificate obtained from Mr Ooghlan, exempting bim from the provisions of the Emigration Restriction Act for a period of six months. Mr DeakiD, when questioned in the House about the matter, said that he had informed Mr Coghlan, who had communicated with him on the subject, that no certificate exemption was necessary in this case, but apparently the letter to Mr Cogblan was not delivered before Gooderham left London. Mr Deakin further stated that he was making enquiries with the object of lßtting it be known that exemption certificates were absolutely unnecessary in such cases.
