I may send my assistant in advance of me if I am detained longer than I anticipate. 80th September, 1905.

“ My assistant, Mr, Coustin, will arrive in Gisborne on Wednesday, 11th October, and I shall follow immediately afterwards. It will be necessary to get a track out about five feet wide up the Te Arai from the junction, whioh will answer the purof allowing contractors to view the grounc. and also for sledging pipes up. I would recommend that you get some men put on at once, as it will expedite matters if this work is put in hand forthwith. Some handy men in the district, who have a knowledge of this class of work would bo most suitable.”

3rd October, 1905,

“ Herewith I return agreement between your Council and myself, duly signed and witnessed, and have to thank you for your promptness in sending it on. - I wired to you for two of the litho plans of Gisborne and suburbs, as there is some work I will put in band that can be going on here while lam in Gisborne. Mr Ooußtin, my assistant, will leave here on Monday morning, and will be in Gisborne on Wednesday morning, and he will make a start with the preliminary survey of the pipe line, and I shall also hope to be with yon a few days later. I should have come at onoe only there were eome matters to put in train here before I could leave.” OVERSEER’S REPORT.

The Overseer reported as follows Awapuni road : As authorised, I have repaired this road. The place complained of at the gale, leading to the abattoirs, has been gravelled. The whole of the road from Grey street to Awapuni lagoon has had the holes filled in, and the worst of tbs sand holes has been covered with heavy soil. To form this road to any satisfaction would oost £BOO, not including footpaths. It would be useless to form up the road and not gravel it. Customhouse, Kabutia, and Materoa streets are being formed as opportunity offers. The bridges on the boundary of the Borough at Eos street and Waimata road, Whataupoko, are getting in a very bad state, and are scarcely worth repairing. The bridge on the Waimata road is very bad ; it is so low that the water pours from the road on to the deck of the bridge, consequently the whole thing is in a very bad state. I have repaired the deck of the jetty to the batbiog shed at Oarnarvan street, but the whole of the hand-rail, having been taken away, I have not replaced it. Stanley road : The work on this road iB going on favorably, the culvert ia down in position, all standards are fixed, and the Bides on. There ia nothing now to stop the progress of the work ; but eome delay has been oaused in getting the timber suitable for the work.

INSPECTOR’S REPORT,

The Borough Inspeotor reported as follows 11 Since your last meeting I have been inspecting in different pacts of the borough, and find places in a satisfactory condition of cleanliness. Health Report: 1 have to report that the child which was suffering from diphtheria and isolated at the Oid Men’s Home has reoovoted and gone home to Ormond. I have had the place thoroughly fumigated and the bedding burned, on the suggestion of the dootor, who thought it was the Safest plan, and-the room is again fit sfor occupation. There have been four cases of tuberoulosis notified since your la-t meotiDg, the whole of whioh are being treated at the Gisborne Hospital." POVERTY BAY RACES.

Mr J. W. Walker Bain, secretary of the Poverty Bay Baciug Club, wrote requesting Hie Worship to consider the advisability of declaring; Thursday, 26th inst., a half-holiday from noon. He pointed out that it had been customary to appoint a half-holiday on this date, and ho hoped the same arrangements would be adhered to,

The Mayor: We have had this before us before.

(Jr Bees;. A full day for the show is being declared by you, sir, Cannot you do something in this caso ? His Worship: Not unless it comes before us in due course.

Cr Bees: Your declaration of course will not prevent people from keepiog open if they choose to do so. The Mayor: Well, Ido not know about that. We shall see.

Cr. Bright; Those who respoot your decision will strictly adhere to it. Cr Lysnar: It will be harmless all the business they will do on that day, „ The subject then dropped.
