A POLICE HAUL.
WERE THEY PLAYING "TWO-DP”?
(Per Press 'Association.) Auckland, last night. Fifteen young men were ranged op in single file down the centre of the Police < Court bn a charge of having played a )L game of ohanoe known as “ two-up.” The ages of those oharged were apparently from about 19 years to 35 years. They were of various occupations, such as laborers, cabdrivers, clerks, and warehousemen. Mr Beed, for the defenoe, submitted that there was no case to answer. Thera was, he said, no proof of wagering or gaming. The prosecution only assumed that there was betting or wagering taking place on the throwing up of pennies. Another point was that it must be a game of ohance. There was no proof of that; it was only assumption on the part of the police. Another point was that the, plaoe on which thb men were was not a publio place, The gate was looked, and people broke the fence and thus got into the seotion. He further thought that it was essential to prove that the men actually took part iu the game, and were not iust spectators. The Magistrate reserved his decision.
