MEIKLE’S VINDICATION.

'(Per Presa Association.) Wellington, last night. The Premier afternoon received a large deputation in connection with the Meikle case. An enquiry by an impartial tribunal into the oircumstances of the case, and adequate compensation,, wore; asked for in order to make amends for the torture the man had sufiered. Mr Beddon, in replying,'said that when the compensation that had been given Meikle was voted the Cabinet had been under the impression that that would bo the end of the mattor. If mattors like this were reopened a most dangerous precedent would be established. Still the question shri not be allowed to rest whore it was. The committee set up this session had advised the Government to remove Meikle’s Dame from the reoords, cfr insert tags to show that Lambert had committed perjury, but for whiob Meikle would probably not have been convioted. No legislature in the world would , authorise parts ot State documents .being cut out, but be held that in such . a ease as this particulars concerning ’ the man who had suffered should be inserted. The matter was now bofore law officers, and the matter of placing the. question before Boma tribunal was before tbe Cabinet, .» might bo found to be just to re-open the compensation business. He hoped to make an announcement on Tuesday.
