EMPLOYERS FINED.

.(Pent Press Association.)

Wellington, last night. At the Arbitration Court to-day Levin and Co., Ltd., were summoned by the Cooke end Stewards Union for a breach of award in that thoy employed a steward on the steamer Huoilanga at £3 per month, beiog £2 leas than the wage fixed by the award of the Court. For the defence it was explained that the man entored as on ordinary steward to look after the oifioers “and passengers. Only about twelve of the latter were carried in a year. He was not employed to do the duties of ebief steward. The award provided for the payment of chief steward and assistants. No provision was made for oases where one steward only was employed. The Court held that the steward must be included under the high sounding title of chief steward. For the defence it was pointed out that it would have been competent for respondent to have employed one man as coek and steward aod an assistant at a telal remuneration of £l4, whereas they now paid the cook £lO and steward £B. The Court imposed a penalty of £lO and costs. The Court was engaged during the greater part of the day in hearing appli* cations (or enforcements of awards. In ODe case an employer who had employed a nonsunionist when unionist workman were available was told by the President that employers ought to be ashamed to come to oourt on Buoh charges, as so many similar cases had bosn heard. A firm of gtocsrs was fined £lO and £5 on two charges of failing to pay the minimum wage,, and not paying overtime.
