ESCAPED PRISONERS.
(Per Presa Association.) Blenheim, last night.
Three prisoners at Dungree plantation works, named Ed. Black, James Wilson, and .Bolton, broke loose on Saturday night,' but were re-c’apturod by the warders early next morniDg, having travelled only a few miles in the direotion.of Blenheim. Some articles were taken from the huts of railway surfacemen in the vicinity, and the prisoners will he charged with the theft of these when appearing before the Magistrate.
A SHOT FIRED. Two prisoners escaped from Waiotapu, Rotorua, between midnight and one o’olook on Thursday morning, Tho men were re-arrested shortly afterwards. Particulars with reference to tho osoape show that one of tbe prisoners wa3 a man named Robert McLaren alias Johnson, undergoing sentence of two yoars for breaking and entering and theft at Dunedin. ,
Mr Hickey; proprietor of the Waiotapu Hotel, heariog movements ,in tho house about one o’clock, found a man attempting to break into the bar, and when disturbed the would-be thief made off. Mr Hiokey got a guu and fired a shot after him. Mr Hickoy missed sundry articles, including a macintosh, two caps belongiDg to tourists, aDd some towels. ' Several towels were picked up on tbo road leading to Rotorua, and also a bicycle belonging to the hotel, whioh tho escaped prisoners must have stolen.
Constables Pratt and Blake were despatched from Rotorua, but Johnson was recaptured by Warder Thompson at Butoher’s flaxmill.
