DANGEROUS WORK.

XFer Press Association.) Blenheim, last night. At the inquest on John Lane, tbe cooperative laborer, who was killed by a fall of earth on the railway works, the examination of witnesses turned on the question of whether the methods of tackling tho steep fall of the cutting whero the gang ware employed were quite safe, The foreman deposed that the mode adopted was the usual one on Government works, and was considered perfectly safe. The fall was caused by wbat was known as a greasy back slip. The face had been oarefuliy examined and prepared. The Railway Department gave no insiruotione as to the way in whioh the cutting was to be worked. A local contractor was called, and expressed the opinion that the faos was too deep to be undermined for falling, and benches should have been used. The jury’s verdict stated that no blame was attached to anyone, but a rider was added conveying the opinion that more supervision over the works should bo exercised by those iD authority.
