PERILOUS EXPERIENCES.

PANIC-STRICKEN PASSENGERS.

Howard Smith Compsny’a steamer Peregrine, which arrived at Melbourne on September 18 from Sydney, had one of the most exciting times in her history on the run down the coast, the conditions being so bad that many of the passengers became panio-stricken. The vessel was between Ram Head and Gabo Island, off tbc Viotorian ooast, and about half-past ten in the morning a huge sea struck her on the starboard bow, and before she could rise to the sea, a second enormous wave rose high over the starboard bow and crashed on the forecastle deck, carrying away tbo fittings and sweeping with irresistible foroe into the welldeok, which was filled with water to the top of the rail- [A porthole in the saloon was forced open, and a great body of water swept into the saloon and cabins, cansing the panio stricken passengers to shriek in terror.. The ocoupants of the lower berths were at first nnder the impression that the ship was going down, but as tbe vessel gradually reoovered herself and the water drained away, comparative quietness was restored.
