The,annual moating of the Canterbury Society foe the Prevention of Cruelty to AnimaU was held to night. The report stated that nine prosecutions had been inatuted duriDg the year, and convictions obtained in each; 198 oases of cruelty were reported' to the inspector and 866 cautions were given. The majority of owners and their employees had Bhown greater consideration in treatment of their animalß and earnest desire to prevent ornelty. After being cautioned in no case had the sooiety shirked its responsibility of proseouting. At country and city saleyards the handling of horses, stook, poultry, etc., showed great improvement. The committee hoped that members would do their utmost to stamp out so degrading a sport as live pigeon shooting. Sir John Hall, io moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, complained of the leniency shown by justices in animal cruelty oases. Ho thought the society Bhould be very careful, ana not go further into the matter of pigeon shooting until it was thoroughly well assured that it would oarry publio opinion with it.
