MOANA v. GISBORNE. . VICTORY FOR THE HOME TEAM
3 I Thoro was a large attendance at tho Vic--6 I torin Doinaiu yosiovdtiy ultornoou to I wituoss tho matoh between tho Dovoupoit > I representatives and the Gisborne oiub. I I Two 85 minute spells were played. Tho ’ I game was ably controlled by Mr J. J. 1 I Martin, while Messrs G. Witty and E. L. i I Maude had ohargo of tho lines. The GisI borne girls lookod very nice in their blue j I and white oostumos, and tho Moses ladies I looked charming with green hood gear I and sashes. From the bully-off tho homo I I team assumed tho aggressive, and for the I I fitst quart.r of an hour made things par- I I tieularly livoly for the visitors, and but for J I the good defensivo work put in by Misses I I Alison, Wynyard, and prime, a soore must I ! have followed. By dint of hard work tho I
I Moses forwards changed tho vonuo, and I I mainly through tho instrumentality of 1 " I Misses Maoindoe, Graham, and Alison I I play was brought to neutral territory, j 1 Play of a give and take character took I ; I place, and aB no score had takon plaoe I : J thoro was keen exoitement as no-timo was I j approached. Despite the considerable I I *• barracking ” on either Bide tho game was I continued with foroe, but with no apparent I I advantage to either side, and half time I I was called with no score. I The second spell opened in a mOBt j I livoly manner, the visitors making deter- I I miued efforts to score, but were prevented I I from doing so by the a,blo defence shown I < by Misses Johnston, Jones, Humphreys " and Bennett. A determined rally by the I Gisborne Club changed tho soene of opera- I iions, and finally a very clever piece of I. play culminated in Miss Goffe carrying the ball well into the opponents’ territory, I I Miss Sherratt striking a gGal in good I
I style. . ' Upon resuming Gisborne for a time mado matters particularly lively for the visitors and kept the scene of play around the Moana goal. Misses Sherratt, Goffe, and Humphreys wore in excellent form, I and mainly through their excellent play I another goal resulted, the game ending— I Gisborne two goals, Moana nil. The visitors’ combination was superior I to their opponents, and their stick work I and handling the ball was equally as good, but they looked the paoe and hittiDg power I of the Gisborne players. After the matoh the Gisborne players treated the Moana ladies to afternoon tea at the Alexandria Tea Booms, and in tho evening several of the visitors attended I tho Trinity Club’s danoe at His Majesty’s I Theatre.
